TK vs. Preschool
The kindergarten landscape has been altered seismically in the last 2 decades. Today’s parents are facing a very different set of decisions than theirs did. In the past, the path forward was pretty simple, after 3 and 4 year olds attended preschool, they were enrolled in kindergarten (usually half day) at age 5.
It’s important to note that the developmental needs of children haven’t changed, what has changed are state curriculum frameworks, family child care needs and the recognition that it’s important for all young learners to be exposed to quality early childhood education.
What is TK?
Transitional Kindergarten is offered through public school systems and is open to all children who will turn 4 by September 2 of the coming school year. It is intended to be the first year of a two year kindergarten program.
Although the schedule varies by school district, it is typically a five day, 5-6 hour schedule.
The maximum class size is 20 students with one fully credentialed teacher and a second adult who is a high school graduate with 2 years of college or an A. A. degree or has passed a local assessment test.
The difference between our program and the TK program -
Linda Beach Preschool adheres to the tenets of play based early childhood education developed through research based models.
We believe that 3 and 4 year olds learn most effectively through play in a safe, nurturing environment. It is our belief that during this Pre-operational Stage, young children build their conceptual knowledge through dramatic, imaginative play. The classroom becomes a place to develop self regulation, compassion and kindness toward peers and comfort with routines and behavioral expectations. This is followed by the emergence of logical thinking at which point play becomes a means of connection.
The Linda Beach Preschool environment provides a wide variety of hands-on learning materials designed to foster child driven symbolic/dramatic play, artistic creativity, fine and gross motor development, and sensory exploration.
A 4:1 adult to student ratio allows close connections and meaningful interactions throughout the day. There are always 2 fully credentialed teachers as well as participating parents in the classroom.
We offer Motor Development classes for both our 3 and 4 year olds. Our 4 year old class incorporates an introduction to Spanish language as part of the daily routine.
Our students are introduced to the pre-math, early literacy, language arts and perhaps most importantly, social, emotional and executive function basics that will be necessary for their successful transition to kindergarten. We strive to launch learners that are confident and possess the curiosity and sense of wonder that will serve them throughout their school years and beyond.
